With the estimated number of transvaginal mesh product liability and personal injury lawsuits now exceeding 100,000, women across the country who have had this procedure continue to experience new complications from these defective medical devices.

Transvaginal mesh (TVM) is a net-like implant used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence in women.   These products, which appear as plastic surgical mesh, were minimally tested and so poorly designed that the injuries are devastating women and their families.  Since 2007, reports of complications associated with the use of surgical mesh for POP repair surgery have risen dramatically.

In October 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health notification alerting healthcare providers and the public about the increasing number of serious health issues associated with TVM.  And, in September 2011, the FDA issued a recall of certain TVM devices.

The product design and implantation techniques have caused serious complications, such as erosion, severe pelvic pain and organ perforation.  In addition to painful side effects, some patients required repeat surgeries in order to correct these complications.

Currently, federal TVM litigation is underway in West Virginia against the manufacturers of these products. Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson along with manufacturers American Medical Systems, C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Neomedic, Cook Medical, and Coloplast are the subject of these injury lawsuits.

These companies have already paid millions to settle injury cases and pay jury verdicts; Coloplast agreed to pay $16 million to settle about 400 cases, and American Medical Systems recently agreed to a $54.5 million settlement.

Most women were never informed of the massive risks they were taking before undergoing the TVM procedure.  The side effects of these flawed products impact every aspect of women’s lives, causing extensive emotional harm along with debilitating physical injury.
